NaNoWriMonth?

Hey fairy tale writers, guess what time of year it is?

That's right, it's NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month, that magical time of year when the leaves turn crisp and abruptly fall off the trees, you start to consider candy a legitimate substitute for comfort food, and the hordes of would-be authors from America to Albania scramble to write a 50,000 word novel in a month.

Yep, it's just that good of an idea.

I'm actually participating in NaNoWriMo this year.  It'll be my first time.  If you're participating too, let me know in the comment box, and we can alternately share, encourage, and complain to one another.

If not, consider it.  It's still early, and if you've already got a few thousand words of that half-formed (fairy tale or otherwise) novel laying around, then you're probably already way ahead of the game.

Consider this: Marissa Meyer, author of the New York Time's bestselling Cinder, and one of our own fairy tale tellers, started as her 2008 NaNoWriMo novel.  So there you go.

If you scroll down and look at the right side of the screen, you'll see I've added a NaNoWriMo widget in the no-man's-blog-land between the search bar and the links.  'Cause no one likes accountability, and everyone knows how effective it is!

Because of me extreme-sport writing, and the busy holidays just over the horizon and around the bend (to Grandmother's house we go?), there won't be a Fourth Friday Fairy Tale for the next couple of months.  We'll use it as some time to (I hope) gather more readership and work on those novels.

  1. Awesome! I wrote the (extremely) rough draft of one of my novels during NaNoWriMo 2009, and had a blast. I was terribly tempted just yesterday to jump in... it's still tempting... but I have too much going on and too many irons in the writing fire. Time to finish something--but ah, part of me really regrets it. :)

  2. Good luck! I'm doing it this year, too. I was doing quite well and keeping to the recommended word count until yesterday. I hope you're enjoying yourself and not stressing out too much! Any big issues so far?

    1. That's okay, there's always the weekend to catch up!

Well, early on I ran into the issue of plot holes and trying to move forward despite them. But then I just abandoned chronology and now I write the scenes as they come to me. It's still being written roughly from beginning to end, but it helped me break out of the writer's block. I'll worry about inconsistencies after those 50,000 words!

      You?

  3. Good luck! I participated 2 years ago and 'won' (I always think that sounds funny...) but don't have the time or the ideas for this year. I barely had an idea when I did do it, but funnily enough I've just pulled my novel out and am in the process of transferring it into a short story. So I think that will be my homage to NaNoWriMo this year! Keep us updated! xx

    1. It just goes to show that NaNoWriMo is never a waste of time . . . no matter how much it may seem to be when you're blowing off friends and meals to get it accomplished! x
